Summer Poetry Slam Winner - Week 8

Tucker Jenkins landed a crop dust plane
on the 50 yard line of Riley-Tyler field
at Mooseville High my senior year.
Mr. Vernon had banned Tucker
from driving a 67’ Camaro in donuts
around the west side parking lot.
Tucker didn’t feel like hitching a ride
so he unlatched the barn and flew
his dad’s crop dust plane to school instead.
I remember I was looking out the window,
doodling a petal when I first heard the propeller,
and then I saw the plane rushing for a touchdown.
I couldn’t help but swell inside as I heard Mr. Vernon's voice
over the intercomm frantically asking all available teachers
to report immediately to the football field.
It was a day of potato salad and bottle rockets.
