2012 Summer Poetry Slam Winner - Week 11

Enter the Dragon was the first movie I saw.
It showed at an Oklahoma drive-in theater in 1979.
I was four and loaded into a station wagon
For my parent's once in a Blue Moon date night.
My dad backed the wagon in and popped the hatch.
The Black Hole was the first in the double feature.
I slept through that on soft quilts my mother had spread out.
The crackling of the box next to the window was a lullaby.
But then I woke to Bruce Lee on the screen
And the lullaby had turned to dance music.
I jumped and twirled, kicked and punched,
belting Hi-Yahs at the top of my lungs.
My mother said I watched the entire movie
And imitated the moves with surprising precision.
Though when I watched the movie years later
I couldn’t recall having seen a single scene.
The only thing I remember
Was how exciting it felt watching Bruce Lee.
There’s no doubt he had an influence,
If not on the world, at the very least, on me.
