We're starting the St. Patrick's Day celebration a wee bit earlier this year with a seven-song tribute to drinking (in moderation). Cheers, everyone.

One Mint Julep was written and composed by Rudy Toombs. It first became a hit for The Clovers in 1951 as one of the first drinking songs ever to become popular. Ray Charles's 1961 instrumental version helped One Mint Julep reach a mass audience after it hit No. 1 on the R&B and Pop charts.

Tubthumping was released in 1997 as the lead single from Chumbawamba’s album, Tubthumper. It is the band’s most successful song, peaking at No. 6 on Billboard Hot 100. Inspired by Fforde Grene, an English pub, it was written about the resilience of ordinary people.

We Oughta Be Drinkin’ is from Sheryl Crow’s ninth studio album, Feels Like Home (2013). The opening guitar melody is a tribute to Bobbie Gentry’s Ode to Billie Joe (1967). Crow considers We Oughta Be Drinkin’ the sister song to her 1993 breakout hit, All I Wanna Do.

Chug-A-Lug was written and recorded by Roger Miller for his debut studio album, Roger and Out (1964) and reached No. 9 on Billboard Hot 100. The term “chug-a-lug” means to down a drink quickly, and Miller said the song was based on a friend who could drink a beer in three seconds.

Cheers (Drink to That) is the seventh and final single released from Rihanna’s fifth studio album, Loud (2010). Released in 2011, the song references the movie, Coyote Ugly (2000), samples Avril Lavigne’s I’m with You (2002), and peaked at No. 7 on Billboard Hot 100.

Margaritaville was written by Jimmy Buffett for his 1977 album, Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes. The song is Buffett’s biggest selling hit, landing at No. 8 on Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 on the Easy Listening charts. It was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2016.

Have a Drink On Me is from AC/DC’s seventh studio album, Back In Black (1980). The album was a tribute to lead singer, Bon Scott, who had died of acute alcohol poisoning just five months earlier. Have a Drink On Me was the last recording session he attended before his death.
