As Mooseville University wraps its last week of the semester, we're paying tribute to birds in honor of the freedom that comes with the start of Summer Break for so many in our community.

SONG OF THE monDAY
Three Little Birds is from the Bob Marley and the Wailers 1977 album, Exodus, and also as a single in 1980. The song's been covered by numerous artists and has carved its way into sports. Shane Victorino uses it for his at-bat music, and the Milwaukee Brewers play it after home game losses.

SONG OF THE tuesDAY
Fly Like an Eagle is from Steve Miller Band's 1976 album, Fly Like an Eagle. There are several versions of the song, one with lyrics that say the bird wants to fly to a Native American reservation. The original sold over a million copies, and Seal's cover for the movie, Space Jam did well, too.

SONG OF THE wednesDAY
Blackbird is from the Beatles' 1968 album, The Beatles (also known as the White Album). The song was written by Paul McCartney, though also credited to John Lennon, and was a statement about race relations in the US in the 1960s. It has become one of the top 10 most-recorded songs in history.

SONG OF THE thursDAY
Nightbird is from Eva Cassidy's live album, Nightbird (2015). Originally recorded in 1996 at Blues Alley in DC, several of the tracks had been used on the album, Live at Blues Alley (1996). Cassidy died of melanoma in 1996 before the world knew who she was. Her voice was remarkable. A talent taken too soon, we dedicate this song in her memory.

SONG OF THE friDAY
Free Bird is a power ballad released on Lynyrd Skynyrd's 1973 album, Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd. The song has been featured in tons of movies and TV shows, covered by several artists, and is considered the band's signature song and one of the best rock ballads of all-time.

SONG OF THE saturDAY
Black Crow is from Joni Mitchell's 1976 album, Hejira. The album's title is taken from the Arabic word "hijira," which means journey. Though Hejira wasn't as commercially-successful as some of Joni's other albums, it's one of our favorites, and Black Crow gets us toe-tappin' every time.

SONG OF THE sunDAY
His Eye Is On the Sparrow is a gospel hymn written in 1905. Ethel Waters was one of the earliest recordings. Mahalia Jackson's version earned a Grammy Hall of Fame Award, and Whitney Houston's version for Sparkle was released four months after her death, but we like Lauryn Hill and Tanya Blount's version from Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit (1993).
