Born Erica Abi Wright in Dallas, Texas on Feb. 26, 1971, Erykah Badu is the Queen of Neo Soul.

At the age of 4, she got her first glimpse at stardom when she sang and danced at the Dallas Theater Center and The Black Academy of Arts and Letters (TBAAL).

She changed the spelling of her name when she was 14 and adopted Badu as a surname. The term “kah” signifies the inner self, and Badu is her favorite jazz scat sound.

Badu’s professional career took off when she opened for D’Angelo in 1994 in Fort Worth. Soon after, she signed to Kedar Entertainment and released her first album, Baduizm, in 1997.

Often compared to Billie Holiday, Erykah Badu has busted her ass to earn the title of Queen of Neo Soul. She is a singer-songwriter, mother, record producer, disc jockey, activist, artist, actress, doula, holistic healer, and quite possibly one of the coolest people we have ever seen in real life.

This week we pay tribute to this amazing talent with seven of our favorite Badu jams.

Featured Artist: Marvin Gaye

8/11/2014

If you don't have Marvin Gaye in your music library, you don't know what's going on.

Marvin Gaye's influence on R&B, and music in general, can not be disputed. The Prince of Soul single-handedly helped shape Motown's sound and influenced R&B subgenres like neo-soul.

Born in Washington D.C. in 1939, Marvin Gaye did not have a pleasant childhood. He was repeatedly beaten by his father, Marvin Gay, Sr., a church minister who eventually killed Marvin Gaye at his home when he was just 44.

Before his untimely death, Marvin Gaye created an incredible collection of work that continues to inspire, influence, and change the world today.

From classic grooves like "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" and "Let's Get It On" to political statements like "What's Going On" and "Inner City Blues (Makes Me Want to Holler)" there is isn't an artist out there more passionate and revolutionary than Marvin Gaye.

Our Marvin Gaye Recommends

SONG OF THE monDAY: Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology Song)

"Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology Song)" is from the What's Going On album and is a poignant song about the state of the environment. He was well before his time on environmental issues, and this song
is a must-have Marvin Gaye jam.
SONG OF THE tuesDAY: I Heard It Through the Grapevine

"I Heard It Through the Grapevine" was originally recorded by Smokey Robinson & the Miracles and then Gladys Knight & the Pips,
but it wasn't until Marvin Gaye's version on the In the Groove album that the song became the classic hit it was destined to be.
SONG OF THE wednesDAY: Let's Get It On

Let's Get It On, from the album of the same title, is a classic hit that combines doo-wop and smooth soul to make one sexy sound. The song has been used in countless movies and commercials since its release in 1973. "Let's Get It On" is a must-have for any music lover.
SONG OF THE thursDAY: Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)

From the What's Going On album, Inner City Blues is a poignant look at the bleak economic situation in the ghettos of inner-city America. The song's mellow funk and has a great beat and blunt lyrics.

A little trivia: t
he final minute of the original song recorded for the album is a reprise to "What's Going On" but that minute, as well as other sections of the song, were edited out of the single release so that the song would run under three minutes.
SONF OF THE friDAY: Ain't No Mountain High Enough

From the album United, "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" is a classic jam written by Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson and originally recorded by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell. It's considered one of the most important records Motown ever released.

Diana Ross recorded the song as her first solo hit and it garnered her a Grammy nomination, but there is something special about the original song, something about the blend of Gaye and Terrell's voices that makes "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" a must-have for any music lover.
SONG OF THE saturDAY: Trouble Man

From the soundtrack album of the same title, "Trouble Man" has a blues feel and sounds different than his work on "What's Going On." The song shows the depth of Marvin Gaye's range, and although the album is his only soundtrack and film score, it has inspired artists like James Brown, Barry White, Willie Hutch, and Edwin Starr to produce soundtrack albums of their own. Dig it.
SONG OF THE sunDAY: Ego Tripping Out

Released as a single in 1979, "Ego Tripping Out" is funky fun. You have to appreciate the freestyle jam at the end. Give it a listen and this song will have you walking to a different beat and feeling good about yourself.

Featured Artist: 21 SOULBLAZE

If you're looking for a fun, original, and hardworking artist to add to you music library, check out 21 SOULBLAZE.

Lionel Kelvin D'Cruz is one of the most engaging and hardworking performers we've seen awhile. Not only is he personable on camera and has a great voice, but he also writes good songs, produces and directs his own videos and webisodes, and is a solid publicist. Plus, he's funny.

In addition to being a multi-talented artist, Lionel studied Mass Communications in Singapore through the Oklahoma City University program. D'Cruz and fellow classmate Kuhan, a.k.a. Afro, created J Soul Records, a Singaporean record, talent, music, and entertainment management company that produces urban pop and other contemporary music.

21 SOULBLAZE made its debut with the pop single "I Got You," which was shown on MTV in Asia, Thailand and the Philippines and was also featured on VH1 India. The tune is catchy and the lyrics are fun and impressively delivered.

I Got You

Based on an original script, "The Road Less Taken" is a musical sitcom about two young hopefuls attempting to make it in the music and entertainment industry in Singapore.  Although the webisodes are hard to find online, the webisode's theme song is readily available and is an excellent jam whether you're cruising in your convertible or hopping on a subway.

The Road Less Taken

"The Road Less Taken" is impressive not only from a musical point of view, but also from a promotional perspective. J Soul Records used guerrilla marketing and social media to help build buzz about the project. They also garnered media coverage from more traditional media outlets.

The Road Less Taken Promo

21 SOULBLAZE songs are not yet available on iTunes, that's how exclusive this artist is. If you'd like to get the songs and videos for your iPhone you need to say three Hail Marys and use conversion programs like Garage Band and Firefox plug ins.

If you don't want to go through the trouble of ripping off videos from YouTube, you can hear 21 SOULBLAZE featured on Kopi Dangdut by Singaporean indie pop band, the Sallys on their album An Unlikely Story. The song is catchy and makes you feel like you're on vacation sipping margaritas.

Kopi Dangdut - The Sallys

All in all, give 21 SOULBLAZE a try. The songs make you feel good, get your feet moving, and are an impressive feat that deserves a nod of recognition. It's testament to what's possible when you have a dream and actively pursue it. We could all take a cue from Lionel Kelvin D'Cruz.
