Written by Jerry Ragovoy and Bert Berns, Piece of My Heart was originally recorded by Aretha Franklin’s sister Erma Franklin in 1967. Big Brother and the Holding Company, with Janis Joplin on lead vocals, covered the song in 1968 for their album, Cheap Thrills. Until her death in 1970, Piece of My Heart was Janis Joplin’s biggest commercial success.

Heart of Glass was written by Debbie Harry and Chris Stein. It was the third single from Blondie’s album, Parallel Lines. Released in 1979, the song hit the top of the charts in eight countries. Fans criticized Blondie for abandoning their new wave roots by releasing a disco song, but the “dust-up” helped propel the band from cult group to mainstream icons.

Roxette’s Listen to Your Heart was originally released in Sweden in 1988 from the duo’s second album, Look Sharp!. It peaked at No. 62 in the UK, but when their song, It Must Have Been Love was used in the 1990 movie, Pretty Woman, they capitalizing on the attention. Listen to Your Heart was re-released and hit No. 1 in both the US and UK.

Kickstart My Heart was the second single released from Mötley Crüe’s 1989 album, Dr. Feelgood. Written by bassist Nikki Sixx, the song reached #27 on Billboard Hot 100. In 2011, Kickstart My Heart was available for download for Rock Band 3. The following year, it was featured in a Kia Motors Super Bowl XLVI commercial.

Groove Is In the Heart is a 1990 song by Deee-Lite. Released as the first single from the album, World Clique, the song peaked at No. 4 on Billboard Hot 100 and took the top spot on the dance charts. Lady Miss Kier sings lead vocals with Bootsy Collins providing back-up. Q-Tip, of A Tribe Called Quest, delivers the rap.

Written by Bob Montgomery and Norman Petty, Heartbeat was originally recorded by Buddy Holly in 1958. It was released as a single with the B-side of Well…All Right. Though the song had minor success in the U.S., topping out at No. 82 on Billboard Hot 100, it was the last single Holly released during his lifetime.

Jackie DeShannon wrote Put a Little Love In Your Heart with her brother, Randy Myers, and Jimmy Holiday. The song was released in 1969 and is DeShannon’s highest-charting hit, reaching No. 4 on Billboard Hot 100 and No. 2 on Adult Contemporary. Annie Lennox and Al Green’s version for the 1988 movie, Scrooged, also became a Top 40 hit.
